Called “the funniest farce ever written,” Noises Off presents a manic menagerie of itinerant actors rehearsing a flop called Nothing’s On. Michael Frayn’s Noises Off takes a fond look at the follies of theatre folk, whose susceptibility to out-of-control egos, memory loss, and passionate affairs turn every performance into a high-risk adventure. This play-within-a-play captures a touring theatre troupe’s production of Nothing On in three stages: dress rehearsal, the opening performance, and a performance towards the end of a debilitating run. Frayn gives us a window into the inner workings of theatre behind the scenes, progressing from flubbed lines and missed cues in the dress rehearsal to mounting friction between cast members in the final performance. Brimming with slapstick comedy, Noises Off is a delightful backstage farce, complete with slamming doors, falling trousers, and — of course — flying sardines!

DOTTY OTLEY – A late-middle-aged television actress. She is performing in this show and investing in it for her retirement; struggles to remember blocking, props, and lines; dating her younger co-star Garry. Plays Mrs. Clackett, a Cockney housekeeper for the Brents’ home in England in Nothing’s On.

LLOYD DALLAS – the director of the play, Nothing’s On. Temperamental and jaded. But also suave, smooth, and charming when he chooses to be.

GARRY LEJEUNE – An actor who never can seem to finish a sentence unless it’s dialogue. Tries to keep the show going and remain positive but also prone to vicious jealousy. Plays Roger, the estate agent looking to let the Brent’s house in Nothing’s On.

BROOKE ASHTON – A young and inexperienced actress; always losing her contacts. Plays Vicki, who works for the tax authorities and is trying to woo Roger in Nothing’s On. Must be comfortable wearing lingerie on stage

POPPY NORTON-TAYLOR – Assistant Stage Manager; Hard-working, skittish, and over-sensitive with good reason; understudies Brooke.

FREDERICK FELLOWES – A sweet, but oblivious, actor with a serious fear of violence and blood; blames himself when things go wrong. Plays Phillip Brent, who lives out of the country with his wife Flavia to avoid paying taxes and is on a secret visit in Nothing’s On.

BELINDA BLAIR – a talented, veteran actress; charming, reliable, positive. Acts as the company peacemaker, but is also the company gossip. Plays Flavia, Philip Brent’s wife, who is dependable, though not one for household duties in Nothing’s On.

TIM ALLGOOD – the production’s stage and company manager. Exhausted, over-worked, sleep-deprived, frantic, and completely flustered. Understudies the male roles, fixes the set, and runs Lloyd’s errands on top of his usual duties.

SELSDON MOWBRAY – an aging, veteran actor. Forgetful, alcoholic, nearly deaf (or at least selectively deaf), and prone to napping on the job. Plays a burglar breaking into the Brents’ house in Nothing’s On.
