Synopsis

The middle-aged, eccentric and melancholy narrator, Man In Chair, is feeling rather blue, and decides to play for the audience a record of his favorite musical, the fictional 1928 show The Drowsy Chaperone. As the record plays, the show – a parody of 1920s American musical comedy – comes to life onstage and he wryly comments on the music, story and actors. The musical within the show is lavish with vaudeville gags, Charlsetons galore and rich, comedic characters. The Drowsy Chaperone is an homage to American musicals of the Jazz Age, examining the effect musicals have on the fans who adore them.
